Robert Desai is an established equities investor based in Massachusetts. Prior to his career in finance, Desai had a successful medical career. A 1981 graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook School of Medicine, Robert completed a year of internal medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Mass., followed by a three -year diagnostic radiology residency at Georgetown University Hospital, serving as chief resident from 1984-1985. Dr. Desai then served a one-year Harvard Medical School Fellowship in abdominal imaging at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital that included vascular interventional radiology. He then was named Clinical Assistant Professor of diagnostic radiology at SUNY at Buffalo. In 1988, Desai was appointed to The Cleveland Clinic foundation as Associate Staff, and subsequently as Full Staff. More recently he served as Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine where he was named Associate Professor. He specialized in abdominal imaging.

Robert has been an equities investor since the early 70’s, and has lived through several “crashes” (1987, 1990, 2000, 2007-2008, 2015-16). These “crashes” provided Desai with “learning moments” and for the need for dispassionate evaluation and patience. Throughout the years Robert was moderately successful, but became aware that greater success would require additional time and attention. Ultimately, Desai decided that he had accomplished as much as he could in the practice of Medicine and Radiology, which he no longer found fulfilling. Robert Desai decided to turn his full attention to investing in 2013. Desai’s transition away from the medical field was fairly seamless. Earlier investments of his provided Robert the financial security that allowed him to move onto his second career, concentrating on investing and financial affairs.

As an investor, Robert Desai appreciates the freedom that comes with this new vocation and finds his new career unusually intellectually challenging and satisfying. Additionally Desai can manage his time off as he pleases and frequently uses that time to travel. Ultimately, having the ability to have full control over his destiny has been a welcome change and would like to help others achieve the same.

Apart from his career, Robert Desai is deeply involved with his charitable endeavors. Phi Beta Epsilon is the oldest non-national fraternity at MIT. As a long time member, Robert has always considered his time there as being instrumental in his future success. It was time to give back. Today, Desai is the Treasurer and Board member of the Corporation that owns and maintains the House. Robert provides guidance to the “Actives” Treasurer who maintains the Actives finances which are independent of the Corporation’s. As of late, with a large influx of funds from various successful Alumni, Robert thought this was a great chance to impact the future of the institution.

Currently, Robert and his fellow Board members, are developing a plan for ongoing, continuous physical plant improvements with a goal to no longer needing periodic major renovations. In fact, they’ve just completed a 7.2 million-dollar renovation. The Alumni were exceedingly generous making this possible. Robert and the Board members acknowledge that they cannot count on such generosity in the future. Once established, this will be a contribution that will endure beyond Robert’s tenure, which is beyond rewarding for Desai.
